The research undertaken in Dr. Henderson's laboratory is aimed at characterizing the signaling pathways that regulate skeletal development and metabolism. Genetically altered mice with skeletal disease are used to examine cartilage and bone development in vivo and primary cultures of cells derived from their limbs are used to examine defects in signaling at the molecular biochemical level. The work is relevant to developmental disorders of the skeleton such as rickets and osteochondrodysplasia and to age related disorders such as ostoarthritis and osteoporosis.
